Residue of Light

Documentation in architecture is primarily concerned with procuring a finished built object, or a means to an end. This has restricted the practice of architecture from being a part of an extended reflective process and has confused the understanding of the word ‘documentation’ which usually describes a document of something to exist, as opposed to something that will exist. This has centred the 1:1 built as the end point of design, and hence excludes a serious consideration of the post factum from the discourse.

When post factum documentation is included it is to solidify the object-ness of the final, usually in the form of magazine or competition photos. However, when the post factum is considered seriously, it can decentre the built as the hierarchical end point, and instead encourages an extended reflective practice beyond the building itself. It also offers the opportunity to focus on the effects of these spaces, such as light, which is often side-lined to a digital render or solar gain equation.

Therefore, this thesis embarked on an investigation of pre-existing space through documentation that incorporates light whilst questioning the nature of that documentation, how it is spoken about, and the potentials that it may suggest.

This was initially investigated using two mechanisms: camera obscuras (pinhole cameras) and cyanotype. Following this, the documented processes of these mechanisms are further investigated as equals and as holding transformative potential as their own line of making; documenting the document. This is implemented through photography, printmaking, and reflective writing. Each of these makings is referred to as ‘residue’, whether that be residue of light within a space, residue of a process or residue as transformation.

This residue is located within the post factum, and is sited within a greater field of architectural media and representation through its qualities of trace, scale, time, composition, orthographic projection and occupation. Yet, the position that these methods occupy provide a unique line of enquiry that offers an enriched occupiable understanding of documented space.
