The demographic of Aotearoa New Zealand remains in a continual state of flux, particularly in Auckland and its outer fringes. How can the architecture of this country respond to its evolving cultural diversity?

Different methods of hybrid architecture have often been a sought after solution; however, due to their tendency to imbue juxtaposition, cultures are often divided instead of unified. So how can moments of cultural overlap derived from ancestral heritage and lived experiences help develop a blended architectural language?

This thesis interrogates the concept of a blended architectural language akin to that of an ethnically blended person where cultural distinctions are dimmed yet still preserved as familiar ingredients that add flavour to an overall cohesive design. Through honing in on one’s personal life story and associated ancestral ties, the interweaving of cultures that have transpired throughout the generations and their lasting effects on one’s current state are recognised.

The concept of cultural overlap has been translated to the design process where impacting personal and ancestral moments of intrigue have been pulled to the forefront. Their narratives are dissected through the creation of a series of explorative models that tailor to the overlapping of transparent imagery. The models function as diagrammatic, metaphorical, temporal, and spatial information tools. They are in tandem with revelations of phenomenological output, which work as an aid to develop the design of the intervention. Disparate yet pertinent ingredients congruent with place, function, and atmosphere are processed through a blending design mechanism that breeds fresh forms that embody a life of their own.

This thesis encapsulates the design process as a journey of self-exploration that peers outwards and harnesses moments of discovery made along its path. This body of work highlights the many layers that live within all humans, not solely based on ethnic background but just as equally by sheer human contact. It translates that notion to an architecture enriched by potentials extracted from different cultures through the process of blending.
