a lily at the table.
What is the architecture of a journey?
While journey implies a continuous line of travel, the journey itself becomes punctuated and eventful through storied encounters across the landscape. Where the journey is repeated, it is never the same. The line of travel varies in infinite ways, and a single line becomes interwoven with recollections and variations. These intersections become anchor points for your own story and experience with the journey where the infinite compresses and accumulates to a singular point in comparison to the duration of life.
Mirroring the game of mahjong, this thesis examines the scattering of stories across a landscape and their influence on architecture through mahjong's cycles of expansion across its table and return to a boxed up state. Using my grandfather's journey from Masterton to Wellington throughout his life travelling to produce markets and later in life for cancer treatment, the research takes its enormous geographic span and condenses the journey within the Tom Wong library at the Masterton Cancer Society.
