Memory Recollection: the souls and mind

“I do not invent, I remember.”

Aldo Rossi (1931 - 1997)

The intricate tapestry of memory is linked to the realms of the soul and imagination, where acts of recollection serve as an agitator in the formation of narratives and visions for the future.

This thesis proposes that the imaginative process is inherently grounded in our ability to remember, drawing upon knowledge and experiences from the past. These fragments of memory, imagination, and experience can be reconstructed to inform and create ideal models for aspirational spaces - that is, to forge an individual’s utopia.

Memories are the foundation upon which our experiences are built. It is also a unique ability that us humans inherently own. Memories never truly disappear; they accumulate and layer upon one another, influencing our thoughts and ideas. The act of memory-making, remembering, and layering is understood as utopian thinking.

Memories are mutable, and our minds are mutable.

Through the lens of my past residences, I have embarked on an exploration of design by sketching floorplans and spaces purely from memory. I then began documenting the recollections associated with various areas of my home, translating these recollections into physical models, each representing a unique architectural concept.

This process allows us to recall and reflect on our experiences but also to envision an ideal future utopia. Just as everyone carries their own notion of a perfect space in their minds, I am documenting mine.

The act of remembering, drawing, writing, and creating has culminated in a novel approach to architecture - one that emphasizes the fluidity of memory and the importance of personal narrative in shaping our built environments. This methodology invites a fresh perspective on design, transforming the way we engage with architecture.

All individual’s knowledge and experience enables new design methods to create a Utopia. Everyone’s souls and minds are seen as a complex library of novels that can serve as a resource for future architecture.

Each individual's memory can be blended together into a collective memory, which is a notion or thought that has been processed as collective thoughts by community or society. This notion can then become the basic elements in architecture, starting from structure, function, to the building shape, and it will eventually open up a way to build the Utopia that we all envision.
