Beige Expression;

Wabi Sabi is an ineffable philosophical belief centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection, which prioritises the amalgamation of man and nature above all else. This thesis seeks to explore the embodiment of the philosophy of Wabi Sabi through an exploration of the metaphysical. The nature of the metaphysical spoken about in this thesis, has taken its influence from Leonard Koren’s observation of nature; the imperfect, the incomplete and the impermanent.

The architectural intent of this thesis seeks for a simple freedom from the vexations of the modern world. It is the design of a sanctuary for one to consecrate themselves with an undisturbed adoration of the everyday.

SINK RENDER JPEG
Through systems of photography, writing, digital modelling, rendering and physical composition, a design output has been realised. It is an architectural realisation of the physical properties of Wabi Sabi as an aesthetic sense, formed from the desire to understand its contextual presence and principles of design. These assemblages of images are endeavours to understand the beauty in the unconventional and the evanescence of creation.

Taxonomy of Materials;

Explores the embodiment of the observations of nature in an aesthetic sense through a series of photographic material explorations. An understanding of the contextual presence of the observations of nature are derived.

The imperfect, incomplete and impermanent formed a founding basis of which the embodiment of the physical could be perceived. Perception however is an inherently subjective quality, and Wabi Sabi is an inherently ineffable concept, therefore the series of making in this thesis had to allow for one to craft an individual perception of what it is to possess the Wabi Sabi quality.

TIMBER JPEG
The creation of these images was formed out of a non- linear relationship between words and making, a symbiotic relationship of constant feedback. The many series of making within this work would explore the physical and spiritual perception of the observations of nature. It is important to note that these photographic images were created before a design was realised, the architectural result of this thesis was a manifestation of the materialisation concluded in the study of these images.
